Cody Thompson continued his early-season invasion of Arizona over the weekend as he went into battle in the inaugural Superstition Showdown at Arizona Speedway (San Tan Valley, Arizona).
The weekend opened on Friday night with a talent-laden field of 56 IMCA Modified competitors entered. Cody started the program by qualifying third-fastest in his group before charging to a heat race win. In the 25-lap, $1,000-to-win feature he raced to a fourth-place finish behind Jake O’Neil, Cody Laney, and Ethan Dotson.
Luck was not in Thompson’s corner on Saturday evening as the second round of the tripleheader came to live. Issues in his heat race sidelined him as his outing came to an early end.
On Sunday, Cody looked for better luck with a $5,000 top prize on the line for the Superstition Showdown finale. With a third-place finish in his heat race, Thompson advanced to the finale, where he started 15th. The Iowa racer passed three competitors to finish in 12th.
