Cody Thompson

Thompson competes on 6 consecutive days, notches trio of top-10 finishes

Starting on the first Tuesday in August, Cody Thompson embarked on nearly a week of IMCA Modified racing and turned in multiple strong results along the way.

Thompson’s tour kicked off at Deer Creek Speedway in Spring Valley, Minnesota, where his Team Harris Auto Racing No. 25c Modified was one of 60 class entries in the pits for the $5,000-to-win Harris Clash. He won his heat race on the 3/8-mile oval and started sixth in the 30-lap A-Main. However, he struggled after a solid start and finished 29th.

On Wednesday, Thompson and team moved on to the 3/8-mile Clay County Fair Speedway in Spencer, Iowa, for the 27-car Clay County Clash. After taking sixth in his heat, Thompson rolled off 16th in the 30-lap feature. He marched forward in the race and grabbed a 10th-place result.

The next night saw Thompson race at his home track of Park Jefferson Speedway, the 4/10-mile speed plant in North Sioux City, South Dakota. With 14 Modifieds registered, Thompson used a fifth-place result in one of two heat races to start fifth in the 20-lap A-Main. He retired early and was scored with an 11th-place finish.

On Friday, Thompson was on the move again, this time to Britt, Iowa, and Hancock County Speedway where 34 Modifieds were participating in the first night of the Night of 1,000 Stars at the 4/10-mile oval. After failing to transfer via his heat, Berry used a fifth-place run in his B-Main to start 21st in the 25-lap feature. He came home in the 17th position.

Yet another track was on the docket for Thompson on Saturday when he raced at Harlan, Iowa’s Shelby County Speedway in an 11-car field. He took the checkered flag in his heat and began the 20-lap A-Main from the fifth row. Thompson climbed six positions on the high-banked, 1/3-mile oval and registered a third-place result. He followed Chris Mills and Jace Whitt across the start-finish line, while Jim Thies and Craig Reetz finished fourth and fifth, respectively.

Finally, Thompson wrapped up his six-day stretch with a trip to the 5/16-mile Interstate Speedway in Jefferson, South Dakota, where he was part of a 15-car Modified program. He drove to fifth in his heat race, starting him 10th in the 20-lap feature. Thompson marched forward throughout the event to score a fifth-place result, crossing under the checkered flag behind Chris Abelson, Sean Barragan, Chris Mills and RJ Merchant.
